The word digital comes from the same source as the word digit and digitus (the Latin word for finger), as fingers are used for discrete counting. It is most commonly used in computing and electronics, especially where real-world information is converted to binary numeric form as in digital audio and digital photography.

Making Folders ‘Sticky’ in Windows Explorer
Here’s a quick but useful trick courtesy Tom Kuhlmann.
Windows Explorer, by default, will sort your list of folders by name so a lesser-used folder like “archives” will have a more visible position than, say, the “important” folder.
However, if you would like to keep your frequently-used file folders “pinned” near the top of the Explorer pane, you can easily do that by adding a symbol (like ~, !, ^ but not | or *) to the name of the folder.
Other than symbols, digits may also be used but I think a nomenclature like “~important” sounds slightly better than “1important” or “1-important” though the prefix doesn’t matter as far as Windows Search is concerned.

How a Place Has Changed Over Time?
Google today introduced a new version of Google Earth, which among other new enhancements, sports an easier way for you to explore historical imagery of a place.
Now when you zoom to a particular location on Google Earth, it will pop-up a clock icon in the status bar indicating the earliest year for which historical imagery is available for that location.
You can then move the slider in the timeline, using your mouse or with the help of arrow keys, to see how that place may have changed over time.
For instance, here are aerial images of the Whitehouse captured during 1949 and 1999.

The following video has details on how may access historical imagery in Google Earth.

Zoho Viewer doubles as a Temporary File Hosting Service
Zoho Viewer is an online file viewer that lets you read PDFs, OpenOffice and Microsoft Office documents in the browser without even requiring you to sign-up for an account.
To get started, simply go to viewer.zoho.com, upload your file(s) and publish. You can upload files as large as 10 MB in a single batch.

The other useful but lesser-known features of Zoho Viewer is that it also doubles as a temporary file hosting service for your documents.
While uploading a document to Zoho Viewer, you may specify an expiry time and the documents will automatically be removed from Zoho Servers when that time elapses. If you de-select the “Publish” option, the uploaded document will be deleted as soon as you close the current browser sessions.
Yes, there are quite a few alternatives that give you similar level of control but Zoho Viewer is a quick and hassle-free solution – you don’t have to sign-up and the recipients can view the documents in their browser itself without downloading them locally.

Find the RSS Subscriber Count with Google Reader
The RSS subscriber count gives you an idea of the number of unique users who may have subscribed to the RSS feed of a particular website or a blog.
People may subscribe to a RSS feed in different ways – they may use an online RSS reader (like Google Reader or Netvibes), an offline reader (like FeedDemon or Reeder), through email newsletters, toolbars or even mail clients like Microsoft Outlook. The RSS subscriber count is an approximate summation of all these numbers.
If a site is syndicating its RSS feed via FeedBurner and have made the stats public, you can easily determine the number of RSS subscribers of their feed using the FeedBurner Chicklet.
http://feeds.feedburner.com/~fc/XYZ (replace XYZ with your feed alias)Just replace XYZ in the above URL with the feed name and you should see an image representing the RSS subscriber count – see example.
However, not all sites may be using FeedBurner and in that case, we can still get an approximate number of RSS feed subscribers using Google Reader.
Go to the feed discovery page, type the feed address (URL) in the “search by keyword” box and hit Enter. You may also use keywords but a full feed address will show the perfect match.

These numbers are however approximate as they only include the RSS subscriber base of Google Reader, iGoogle and Google Desktop users as determined by Google FeedFetcher.
Here’s a quick analysis of the RSS numbers of some well-known sites as suggested by Google Reader. As you may have noticed, some of these sites are hugely popular but have lower subscribers counts probably because more people are using other means – like email newsletters or offline RSS readers – to subscribe to that feed.

Orkut Badges for Power Users
Google has introduced badges in Orkut profiles to help you easily flaunt how active you are and how much you know of the social site.

For instance, if you have been on Orkut for more than 5 years, you get the “early user” badge while if you are active on Orkut forums, you are awarded with the “Super User” badge.
Some Orkut users have already been assigned badges though the full rollout will happen only in the coming week according to the Google Blog. Overall, this is a good way to give some recognition to the active Orkut users and, in the process, trying to keep them loyal to the site.

Send Files from the Desktop to your Android Phone via QR Codes
iSendr, as you may recall, is a pretty neat web-based service to help you send files really fast.
Unlike other file transfer services, the unique thing about iSendr is that you don’t have to upload your files to a third-party web server from where the recipient may download them. Here, the transfer happens directly between your two computers and there are virtually no restrictions on file sizes.
From Desktop to Mobile Phone
The iSendr service has recently been upgraded to let you send files directly from your desktop to your Android mobile phone with the help of QR Codes.
It works something like this – you initiate a file transfer session from your desktop and iSendr will provide a QR code on the screen that you can scan* to complete the file download on your mobile phone.
While iPhones and most other smartphones can read QR codes, the iSendr app is written in Flash and will therefore only work on the newer Android phones that have the Flash player.
[*] You may either use the Google Goggles App or the Barcode Scanner to read QR codes on your Android mobile phone.

Prevent Unnecessary Printing of Docs with WWF
The signature of your email reads – “Please consider the environment before printing this email” – but some of your colleagues don’t seem to care. What do you do next to discourage them from printing email attachments and other useless stuff?
WWF, the organization that is focused on the conservation of our environment and wild-life, have come up with a unique idea to prevent such “casual” users from sending print commands.
They have created a new file format called WWF that is exactly like PDF except for the print functionality. That is, a document saved as WWF can be read inside any PDF reader but the person won’t be able to print it.

To get started, install the WWF Software and then use “Save as .WWF” while saving your documents, emails, web pages, etc. The software is currently available for Mac only though the Windows version is expected to become available soon.
Technically, the WWF format is just another PDF file but one that cannot be printed out. If you have a PDF writer installed on your machine already, you may check the “disable printing” option while creating PDFs and it will also have a similar effect.

Start a YouTube Video at any Specific Time
Do you want to share the most interesting part of a YouTube video with your contacts without wasting their time?

YouTube URLs have long supported the “time” parameter that lets you link directly to any specific time of a video. For example, if you open the following YouTube URL in your browser, the video playback will start at the 1 minute 22 second mark and not from the beginning.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=tUIuTkjY#t=1m22sWhat has changed then? Earlier you had to add the “t” parameter to YouTube URLs manually but now you may do that more easily using the contextual menu itself.
While watching a video on YouTube, just right click anywhere inside the video player and select the option that says “Copy Video URL at Current Time” – the copied URL will now include the “t” parameter pointing to the current location of the video.
This however won’t work with YouTube short URLs (like youtu.be/tUIuTkjY#t=1m22s) and, though you can specify any start time, there’s currently no way to end the YouTube video playback at a certain time.

Bandwidth Limits in Dropbox
The other day I shared how you may use Dropbox as a CDN to host the static content of your WordPress site. That will not only improve the performance of your website, because you are now using a CDN, but will also decrease the bandwidth requirement of your own web server since some of the files are getting served through Dropbox.
Dropbox provides nearly 2.5 GB of free storage space and that is obviously more than enough to host all the images, CSS and other static files of most websites. However, there’s a caveat you should be aware of.

Bandwidth Limits for Public Folders in Dropbox
If you have a low-traffic site, the above solution may work without issues but for everyone else, it may not always be a good idea to use Dropbox as a file hosting service.
That’s because Dropbox imposes certain bandwidth limits on files in the Public folder and if you exceed that limit, the URLs of your public file may be temporarily disabled thus returning a 404 error to your visitors.
According to Dropbox support, public links for free accounts may not use more than 10GB of bandwidth per day while that limit is 250GB per day for paid Dropbox accounts. The links are automatically suspended if any of your files exceed that limit.
For comparison, let’s say you have a one page website hosted on Dropbox and the entire weight of all the images, CSS and other static files served through that page is around 400 kb. That means the page should have less than 25k impressions in a day for you to stay within the Dropbox limit.
And if another site decides to hotlink to your static images, it may exhaust your “free bandwidth” quota even sooner.
Thank you Ashish Mohta for the tip.

Wolfram Alpha Can Answer Complex Questions
Wolfram Alpha is smart and here’s some more proof to support that.

If you are to find the historic price of Apple stock on the day when Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg was born and that too in your local currency, it will require several hops.
You’ll have to visit Zuck’s Wikipedia entry to know his birth date, then to Yahoo! Finance for the APPL stock price and finally to Google to perform currency conversion.
Wolfram can answer such a complex question with a single query written in natural English without requiring you to search anything. Awesome! [via Facebook]

Embed SlideShare Presentations without Flash
Your PowerPoint presentation is hosted on SlideShare and you want to embed it onto your website? That’s simple – just grab the embed code for the presentation and copy-paste it anywhere in your site.
There’s however a small problem here. SlideShare uses the Flash Player and thus, your embedded slides won’t be available to visitors who are either using mobile devices or don’t have the Flash plug-in on their computers (like the new Macbook Airs).
Christian Heilmann, former Developer Evangelist at Yahoo, has come up with an excellent solution to this problem. Go to icant.co.uk, enter the URL of your SlideShare presentation and the tool will generated an IFRAME based embed code that will work in all web browser without requiring the Flash player plugin.
Internally, the tool takes the mobile version of a SlideShare presentation and wraps it as an image slideshow using the YUI library. The full code is available on GitHub and you may even host it on your own web server.
To give you an example, here’s a Slideshare deck embedded using Flash Player..
..and this is the same deck embedded using plain HTML. All it misses is the full-screen mode.

FeedDemon 4.0 Goes Freemium
FeedDemon 4.0, the most popular RSS Reader for Windows, is now out of beta and you may download the latest version from feeddemon.com.
This release offers significant performance enhancements and the newspaper layouts have been completely revamped thus vastly improving the reading experience. FeedDemon 4.0 also includes a brand new sidebar where you get a river view of all unread items coming from your social subscriptions like Twitter and Facebook.

From Adware to Freemium
FeedDemon previously followed an “adware” model – everyone had access to all the features of the software and one could pay $9.95 to to do away with the advertisements.
FeedDemon 4.0 however takes the freemium approach and is available in two editions – FeedDemon Lite which is a free and ad-supported version but with a reduced feature set while FeedDemon Pro has all the goodies and no ads.
FeedDemon Pro vs FeedDemon Lite
Both editions will sync with Google Reader but with FeedDemon Pro, you have the prefetch option that will download the images / web pages linked to the feed items and thus you may read them offline in their full glory.
The Pro edition also lets you subscribe to private feeds (secure feeds protected by a password), something which you cannot do even inside Google Reader. This page has more details on the differences between FeedDemon Lite and FeedDemon Pro.
The Pro license for FeedDemon 4.0 is available for $19.95 but if you already have a serial number for a previous version, the upgrade will cost you $9.95. Or if you don’t mind working with a reduced feature-set, FeedDemon is still free for you as before.

How to Temporarily Block Time-Wasting Websites
You have certain important tasks to complete in the next hour or so and yet you have trouble staying focused for long because of all these online distractions coming through Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and other websites.
It maybe slightly unfair to categorize some of these sites as “time wasting” but at the same time, the endless stream of new content available on these sites can consume lot of your precious time before you even realize it.
LetMeWork – A Toggle Switch for the Time-Wasting Web
If you have trouble exercising self-discipline and can’t seem to stop yourself from constantly checking your social sites and email accounts for new updates, here’s an easy solution.
Download and unzip the file – LetMeWork.zip – to your desktop and double-click it to instantly block some of the distracting sites on your computer. When you are done with your work, double-click the same file again to unblock access to all the sites as before.
[*] You may see a User Access Control warning dialog in Windows Vista or 7 – just say yes.
How the script blocks and unblocks websites
The standard way for blocking any site on your computer is through the HOSTS file that’s available in the Windows directory.
It does take some effort to edit the HOSTS file and what the above script (source code) does is hide all the complexity from the user and lets you block as well as unblock sites with a click.
The list is customizable. You may open the vbs file in notepad and edit the WebsitesToBlock array to include any other website(s) in the banned list.
WebsitesToBlock=Array("twitter.com", "www.youtube.com", "facebook.com")There are some browser extensions that seem to solve the same problem but this script is run-once, use-everywhere. You execute it from the desktop and it will block /unblock access to select sites across all browsers.

Dropbox 1.0 RC is here!
Dropbox, a hugely popular online storage solution that also helps you keep files across multiple computers in sync, has just hit a milestone. The team has released Dropbox 1.0 RC for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux – more than two years after the first beta hit the tubes.
Dropbox 1.0 contains numerous bug fixes, performance improvements and should consume less CPU resources than the previous versions.
Among the new features, Dropbox 1.0 includes Selective Sync – you can instruct Dropbox to keep certain file folders in the cloud only and not download them to your computer’s hard drive.
To give you a practical example, let’s say you have a 500 MB file on computer A that you only want to backup online and not sync across computers. You may configure Selective Sync on computer B and that particular file won’t download on the second computer thus saving you plenty of bandwidth.

The other very useful enhancement is that you may now share even non-public folders on Dropbox with anyone outside. Just right-click on the file in Windows Explorer and choose “Get Shareable Link” to get a secure (https) short link powered by db.tt that anyone may use to access that file.
However, you’ll be a bit disappoint to know that the Dropbox team has skipped the most-requested “Watch any Folder” feature in the 1.0 release even though it was in the initial plan as per the Votebox. That means you’ll still have to copy your files to the “My Dropbox” folder for keeping them in sync.
I have been using Dropbox v.0.8.x for some time on Windows and have found it to be pretty stable so far. The 1.0.0 RC is a direct jump from 0.8.x builds.
Your copy of Dropbox will auto-update once 1.0 final is available but meanwhile, you may download the first release candidate from Dropbox forums.

Display Readability Levels in Google Search Results
There are certain mathematical formulas, like the Flesch-Kincaid test, that can analyze a document for their “readability level” or the ease at which that document can be read. The score is calculated based on the average number of syllables used per word and the number of words used per sentence.
Readability scores generally help teachers decide if a particular book is suitable for students of a particular grade /age or not.
Readability Level of Web Pages

Earlier, if you were to calculate the readability level of any web page, you would have to copy-paste the text content of that page in a external tool* like Flesh but not any more.
Google has added a new advanced search option that lets you display the readability level of web pages in the search results itself. So if you want to read a page that’s written in simple English, click the result that’s marked as “Basic reading level.”
You can also filter search results in Google by readability level. For instance, set the “reading level” option in Google Advanced Search to “show only basic results” and it should remove pages from search results that may be slightly hard to comprehend.
[*] You could earlier calculate readability scores of documents directly in Google Docs but looks like the features has been dropped now. You can however use Microsoft Word for the same.

Distribute Your Blog Through Nokia’s Ovi Store

While Nokia gets little love from tech pundits in the west, Symbian powered mobile phones still command the highest market share worldwide and this number is significantly higher in Asia, South America and African countries.
Nokia’s Ovi Store has around 140 million users worldwide and thus, if you are content creator, the store presents an excellent opportunity for you to showcase your stuff to such a large audience in the form of an app.
Build an app in 60 seconds
If you have ever tried building an app for your blog for distribution through Apple’s App store, you know the drill. First, it requires you to have the technical know-how, you need an Apple developer account and, if you are writing the app on your own, you also need to have a Mac.
With Nokia’s Ovi Store, a person with no programming skills can build an app in minutes through an online wizard – all they need is a blog with an RSS feed. There’s no fees involved and your Ovi App created through the wizard can be downloaded on almost all Nokia devices except for some of the recent ones.

The wizard offers limited customization options – you may change the background and text colors but nothing beyond that. If you have more than one feed, you may publish them all in a single app without having to merge them separately.
To give you an example, I created this mobile app for Digital Inspiration using the wizard, it got approved by the Ovi QA team in about a day (they need to confirm that you own the content) and now anyone, anywhere may download the app on their mobile through the Ovi Store.
How is the app any different from directly reading an RSS feed on the phone? Well, the biggest advantage is that the Ovi app optimizes your blog images for the mobile screen and thus the entries should load a lot quicker.
Also, when people have your blog installed as an app on the home screen of their mobiles, they’re probably going to check it more frequently.

Disable the “Protected View” Mode in Office 2010

Microsoft Office 2010 includes a new “Protected View” that, by default, will open all Outlook attachments and documents downloaded from the Internet in “read-only” mode.
For instance, if a colleague has sent you a spreadsheet as an email attachment, when you double-click that file, it will only open as a read-only document inside Excel. The same holds true for Word and PowerPoint files as well. In the Protected Mode, you are neither able to edit your documents nor can you send them to the printer.
How to Disable Protected View
You can easily switch from the Protected View to Edit mode with a click but if you would like to permanently turn off that security setting such that all your future email attachments /web documents open in regular mode, here’s the required setting.
Launch Microsoft Word, or any of the Office 2010 programs, and go to File –> Options –> Trust Center –> Trust Center Settings.
Click “Protected View” here and deselect the option that says “Enable Protected View for Outlook Attachments.” If you get stuck, follow this screencast:

A New Dropbox Edition for your Business
Dropbox today introduced a new edition for small businesses and other organizations who are considering moving to a cloud based solution for file sharing and synchronization .
Aptly named as Dropbox for Teams, this edition offers all the features that are available in the standard Dropbox edition but here, you buy a single pool of storage space that is then shared by all the other members of your team.
As an admin, you can centrally manage the whole Dropbox account and add /remove users as per need, buy additional storage for the common pool and more. Unlike the standard edition where the maximum space that you can have is 100 GB per account, Dropbox for Teams edition lets you buy as much storage as you need for the whole team.
Now comes the pricing. The Dropbox for Teams plan starts at $795/year and this comes with 350 GB of storage to be shared among five users. It sounds steep but if you have enough users in your organization using the 100 GB Dropbox plan for official purposes, the team edition actually turns out be less expensive. However, here you don’t have the option to pay monthly.

An Undocumented Google Search Operator
Search operators in Google help you refine and improve search results.
For instance, a query like “Taj Mahal AND Hotel” will search for pages related to the Hotel Taj and not the Mughal monument. Similarly, “kindle -site:amazon.com” will find all Kindle related resources outside the Amazon website.
This Google cheat sheet [PDF] has a nice overview of all the popular search operators that are supported in Google. Other than this “official” list, Google also supports an undocumented search operator called AROUND(n) that will help you find documents where the distance between two search terms is around ‘n.’
Here are some examples.

Daniel Russell, who first wrote about the AROUND operator, says that AROUND is especially useful when the documents are rather long (think book-length articles) while a comment points out that it could be also be useful “when searching for quotes, speeches or a song that’s stuck in your head, but you can only think of a few words from it.”
Coming back to our original example, a query like “CNN Obama” will mostly show CNN pages that are related to Obama. However, if we modify the query to look like “CNN AROUND(2) Obama,” you get results where these two terms are written in close proximity.
The higher the number, the less the proximity.

Google’s wildcard search operator, represented by Asterisk (Obama * CNN), may achieve similar results but with AROUND, you even get to specify the distance between the two search terms. Do remember to write AROUND in all CAPS else it won’t work.
Thank you Pedro Dias for the tip.
