The word digital comes from the same source as the word digit and digitus (the Latin word for finger), as fingers are used for discrete counting. It is most commonly used in computing and electronics, especially where real-world information is converted to binary numeric form as in digital audio and digital photography.

Making Folders ‘Sticky’ in Windows Explorer
Here’s a quick but useful trick courtesy Tom Kuhlmann.
Windows Explorer, by default, will sort your list of folders by name so a lesser-used folder like “archives” will have a more visible position than, say, the “important” folder.
However, if you would like to keep your frequently-used file folders “pinned” near the top of the Explorer pane, you can easily do that by adding a symbol (like ~, !, ^ but not | or *) to the name of the folder.
Other than symbols, digits may also be used but I think a nomenclature like “~important” sounds slightly better than “1important” or “1-important” though the prefix doesn’t matter as far as Windows Search is concerned.

How a Place Has Changed Over Time?
Google today introduced a new version of Google Earth, which among other new enhancements, sports an easier way for you to explore historical imagery of a place.
Now when you zoom to a particular location on Google Earth, it will pop-up a clock icon in the status bar indicating the earliest year for which historical imagery is available for that location.
You can then move the slider in the timeline, using your mouse or with the help of arrow keys, to see how that place may have changed over time.
For instance, here are aerial images of the Whitehouse captured during 1949 and 1999.

The following video has details on how may access historical imagery in Google Earth.

Zoho Viewer doubles as a Temporary File Hosting Service
Zoho Viewer is an online file viewer that lets you read PDFs, OpenOffice and Microsoft Office documents in the browser without even requiring you to sign-up for an account.
To get started, simply go to viewer.zoho.com, upload your file(s) and publish. You can upload files as large as 10 MB in a single batch.

The other useful but lesser-known features of Zoho Viewer is that it also doubles as a temporary file hosting service for your documents.
While uploading a document to Zoho Viewer, you may specify an expiry time and the documents will automatically be removed from Zoho Servers when that time elapses. If you de-select the “Publish” option, the uploaded document will be deleted as soon as you close the current browser sessions.
Yes, there are quite a few alternatives that give you similar level of control but Zoho Viewer is a quick and hassle-free solution – you don’t have to sign-up and the recipients can view the documents in their browser itself without downloading them locally.

Find the RSS Subscriber Count with Google Reader
The RSS subscriber count gives you an idea of the number of unique users who may have subscribed to the RSS feed of a particular website or a blog.
People may subscribe to a RSS feed in different ways – they may use an online RSS reader (like Google Reader or Netvibes), an offline reader (like FeedDemon or Reeder), through email newsletters, toolbars or even mail clients like Microsoft Outlook. The RSS subscriber count is an approximate summation of all these numbers.
If a site is syndicating its RSS feed via FeedBurner and have made the stats public, you can easily determine the number of RSS subscribers of their feed using the FeedBurner Chicklet.
http://feeds.feedburner.com/~fc/XYZ (replace XYZ with your feed alias)Just replace XYZ in the above URL with the feed name and you should see an image representing the RSS subscriber count – see example.
However, not all sites may be using FeedBurner and in that case, we can still get an approximate number of RSS feed subscribers using Google Reader.
Go to the feed discovery page, type the feed address (URL) in the “search by keyword” box and hit Enter. You may also use keywords but a full feed address will show the perfect match.

These numbers are however approximate as they only include the RSS subscriber base of Google Reader, iGoogle and Google Desktop users as determined by Google FeedFetcher.
Here’s a quick analysis of the RSS numbers of some well-known sites as suggested by Google Reader. As you may have noticed, some of these sites are hugely popular but have lower subscribers counts probably because more people are using other means – like email newsletters or offline RSS readers – to subscribe to that feed.

Orkut Badges for Power Users
Google has introduced badges in Orkut profiles to help you easily flaunt how active you are and how much you know of the social site.

For instance, if you have been on Orkut for more than 5 years, you get the “early user” badge while if you are active on Orkut forums, you are awarded with the “Super User” badge.
Some Orkut users have already been assigned badges though the full rollout will happen only in the coming week according to the Google Blog. Overall, this is a good way to give some recognition to the active Orkut users and, in the process, trying to keep them loyal to the site.
